Over the course of a computer's life, leftover "junk" files and registry entries are left scattered around the disk. Windows has the Disk Cleanup tool to remedy some of these situations, but not nearly all or enough - that's why cleanup tools were created. CCleaner is the most established, complete, and safe of the bunch.
CCleaner began humbly as "Crap Cleaner", but as it became more and more widespread, the Piriform developers decided to take themselves a little more seriously and renamed the software to CCleaner. (Others like DCleaner, FCleaner, KCleaner, NCleaner have followed suit, but don't compare.)
CCleaner's has always had the same, simple mission: cleanup the crap that Windows and 3rd-party programs leave behind on the disk. This task can greatly improve your system's speed and stability, as well as potentially free up a lot of disk space. Here is a quick feature rundown of CCleaner:
- Cleanup:
Removes physical files left behind by Windows components and other common programs. - Registry:
Scans the registry for obsolete entries and removes them. Just to be safe, the user is prompted to backup the removed entries to a .REG file first. - Tools:
Control files and programs that run at system startup (a simplified Autoruns), or uninstall software and remove invalid uninstall entries. - Options:
Specify other folder and files to be removed (or NOT removed) during Cleanup; select cookies that should not be deleted; select secure file deletion if desired; etc.
CCleaner is a 32-bit program, but it does support 64-bit Windows operating systems too. If you notice any bugginess or slow-down on your computer, run CCleaner and you may be delighted to find your problems remedied.
