Although solid-state drive technology is making its way into mainstream consumer computing, traditional hard drives are here to stay for awhile. They're much cheaper, but as everyone knows, they won't last forever. Use CrystalDiskInfo to help predict drive failures before they happen.
S.M.A.R.T. was developed just for this reason - to warn users before their hard drive dies, so they have time to make backups and prepare a new disk. All disk-monitoring software uses S.M.A.R.T. to determine various details about the state of the disk, like temperature, errors, and even the number of minutes that the disk has been in use. Some manufacturers include a S.M.A.R.T. scan as part of the boot-up scan, but CrystalDiskInfo will keep a more informative, closer eye on your disks. S.M.A.R.T. isn't perfect, but it will predict 64% of all hard drive failures, which is better than flying blind.
CrystalDiskInfo is lightweight, with minimal RAM and CPU usage, so if you're using a Windows computer with any moving-parts hard drives at all, there's no reason not to let it sit quietly in your system tray, ready to alert you if your drives get overheated or start to fail.
NOTE: You may also want to check out GSmartControl, another excellent disk-monitoring tool based on Smartmontools, just like CrystalDiskInfo.
