freeFTPd / freeSSHd : Easily run your own FTP or SSH server

Bookmark and Share

In computer terms, the FTP (File Transfer Protocol) protocol is an antique, actually older than both HTTP and TCP/IP. As you might expect with dated technology, in its original form, FTP is now extremely vulnerable to security threats. Luckily you can get around these exploits by using SFTP or FTPS.

Setting up an SSH or SFTP server is usually expensive and complicated. Amazingly, the WeOnlyDo! Software developers (cheesy name, I know) have provided the world with two extremely simple, top-notch, free programs: freeSSHd and freeFTPd. There are some key differences between the two.

freeFTPd

freeFTPd is more of a traditional FTP server than its counterpart, but it still upholds the same high level of security with FTPS and SFTP support, while being very accessible and beginner-friendly. If all you're looking for is a secure FTP solution for remote access to your files, freeFTPd is for you - it has more configurable options for FTP settings and access levels than freeSSHd.

freeSSHd

freeSSHd is really a full-fledged SSH and Telnet server with integrated SFTP server. While SFTP is very secure and FTP-like, you'll need an client that supports SFTP (like FileZilla) to access your files - your web browser won't cut it. But it so happens that SSH has many different purposes, so if you have other uses for an SSH server, use freeSSHd over freeFTPd.

freeFTPd and freeSSHd are both excellent projects that provide simple, free solutions to fill a void that has been largely surrounded by commercial products for years.
