When I first heard about "IM" (remember ICQ?) in 1997, I was impressed, but had no idea of the impact it would have. More than 10 years has passed, and a lot has changed, but instant messaging is basically still the same - it's just so widespread that multi-protocol IM clients are now a necessity.
There are just too many protocols to keep track of. (SILC? Gadu-Gadu?) Most of the world still uses a few key networks like AOL, Google Talk, MSN, and Yahoo, but few people have all of their friends on a single network. This is where a client like Digsby comes into play.
Digsby handles all of the major protocols and has the most attractive and productive interface of any other multi-protocol client. You can embed Digsby as a widget on your site, send e-mail right from the client - there are numerous other exclusive features (check them all out at Digsby's site). But it does have some problems you should be aware of before installing it.
Beware of ad-ware! Digsby's installer is unfortunately bundled with adware. Since a big public stink was raised about their tactics, they've changed their installer to the more straight-forward optional adware model. Sadly they haven't been able to find any other way to generate revenue yet. Just know that you'll have to uncheck a few boxes during setup.
Digsby does have a fair share of shortcomings, but it makes up for them with its many features and a customizable, polished GUI (still... it's walking on thin ice).
NOTE: Digsby has been "coming soon" to Linux and Mac for a very long time. I wouldn't expect it anytime soon - this page will be updated once it arrives. We recommend Palringo to all other OS users in the meantime.
