Contrary to popular belief, synchronization (sync) and backup are not the same - sync is just a popular backup method. Backup is a broad and complex genre (well handled by SyncBack), but sync is a pretty simple concept - it's just keeping two or more identical sets of files in different locations. No app handles sync with more sophistication than FreeFileSync.
Even though sync is a simple concept, it's extremely important to perform it properly, or you could end up with missing or unwanted files. If a file is accidentally deleted, it will be accidentally deleted from both locations, and it could be a similar headache if the sync only copies new or changed files, and doesn't replicate deletions.
Luckily, FreeFileSync has us covered. It does everything a typical sync program like Microsoft's SyncToy does, but it's in the details that FreeFileSync shines:
- Multiple methods: Automatic ("true sync"), Mirror, Update, Two Way, and a Custom option - all explained in simple language.
- Deletion handling: Replicates deletions on either side in Automatic mode; choose what to do with deleted files - place them in a custom folder, send to the Recycle Bin, or delete permanently.
- Speed!: FreeFileSync processes thousands of files and folders in a fraction of the time taken by similar software. Really - you'll be amazed.
- Shadow copying: Makes it possible to copy open or locked files during sync.
- Real-time sync: Sync automatically when changes are detected in one of the locations.
