Mp3tag : Add some polish to your music collection

Bookmark and Share

Digital music is just not as simple to organize as compact discs. We have CD towers and wallets to help prevent jewel cases from being scattered around the room. And even if a CD were misplaced, you could identify it quickly by the album or disc art. Not so with digital music - but that's where Mp3tag comes in.

A logical folder/file naming structure can be tedious to maintain. Even if the structure is correct, your audio player won't necessarily recognize the music playing. For this it relies on the tags buried within each file. Mp3tag is a master in this respect, and can handle MP3s and pretty much any other music file you throw at it.

With endless sources from which to download music, and many people downloading only favorite songs instead of full albums, odds are that most files you download won't be tagged properly for your music collection. For a tidy library, your music should follow a tagging scheme with, at a minimum, the following information: Artist Name, Album Title, Song Title, Track #, Year Released, and Genre. For kicks, and to be able to recognize an album visually, you should also include Album Art if possible.

Mp3tag simplifies this otherwise tedious, time-consuming process by not only allowing you to enter values for multiple songs at once, but also giving you integrated access to online music databases like Amazon.com. With the click of a mouse, you can save the Amazon.com information (including album art) to your tags. Another couple clicks and you can rename the songs to follow a particular format you prefer.

A couple notes on use: genre information is usually much too broad (unless you want to classify everything as "Rock"), so you'll probably have to change that value yourself. Also, it's good practice to delete/clear the tags before writing the new ones, so there is not inconsistent additional tag information between tracks.

NOTE: If you like to include lots of detail in your tags (like I do), you may also want to look at The Godfather. It's not actively developed anymore, but some users have scripted AMG support - the most complete music database around.
